David Hodgkinson
Director - Emergency Medicine Consultant and Sports Physician

David qualified at Nottingham medical school in 1983.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians, the College of Emergency Medicine, and a Fellow of the faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.  He is currently The Director Of Emergency Medicine at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust. In addition he consults at The Nuffield Hospital Ipswich and The Havens, Ipswich.

His special interests include Critical illness recognition and resuscitation, Brain injury, Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology.
David’s frustration with the fragmented, inaccessible service offered to athletes of all levels is behind his desire for Sportsmed East to be a single point of access to affordable, accessible and effective Sports Health services.  David is keen to expand the use of Exercise Physiology in Planning an Athlete’s Training Programme.  He is also keen to promote the health benefits of Sport and Exercise.

David Williams
Director - Chartered Physiotherapist

David studied Physiotherapy at Kings College Hospital, London, qualifying in 1987. He spent the first half of his career in the NHS, principally as a senior Physiotherapist at The Royal London Hospital. In 1993 he Joined Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club as a Physiotherapist before moving to Ipswich Town Football Club as their Head Physiotherapist. In 2004 David completed a Masters in Sports and Exercise Science at Essex University.

High quality medical provision should not only be the premise of the professional or sponsored athlete, it should be available to all who exercise, at whatever level. It is for this reason that David began to Collaborate with his colleagues to form Sportsmed East, and to piece together a network of expert clinicians who can provide a multi-disciplinary approach to sports injury/health management. David now works solely with Sportsmed East. After spending the majority of his career in professional sport, he is able to call on that valuable experience when providing injury treatment and rehabilitation to sports people at every level. David specialises on Sport Specific Rehabilitation, and has a particular interest in the management of lower limb Tendinopathies.

Jonathan George
Chartered Physiotherapist

Jonathan graduated from Brunel University in 1997 with an honours degree in Physiotherapy. Since then Jonathan has worked in both the public and private sector with a specialist interest in musculoskeletal disorders. As well as being Head Physiotherapist at QPR Football Club, Jonathan has extensive experience in the treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and has worked with elite athletes in the fields of athletics, tennis, golf and motor racing.

In 2007 Jonathan completed his Masters in Neuromuscular Physiotherapy and is nearing completion. He is a fully qualified member of the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP). Jonathan's areas of interest include spinal and knee disorders and acupuncture (when appropriate), which can be used as an adjunct to overall treatment.

Mark Hainsworth
Sports Doctor

Mark Qualified as a doctor in 1984 from Auckland University.  In 1986  he completed a Diploma in sports Medicine in Otago.It was at this time that he began developing a special  interest in overuse injuries due to pronation in runners.  He became a member of the Royal college of General Practitioners in 1991 and has worked as a GP in Bildeston since 1993.

As an active GP he has a biomechanical and sports medical interest and has developed a practice in dealing with runners. He also offers an internet based service of running analysis which has proved very popular. This service allows him to review your running at a distance and make recommendations to help you see why you have got injured and what you can do to prevent this. Recommendations are made according o the principles developed by the POSE method of running (www.posetech.com) Chi running (www.chirunning.com) and Stride Mechanics (www.stridemechanics.com). In 2008 Mark completed coaching qualifications in the POSE method of running.  Mark’s other sporting interests include skiing, including considerable experience as a Ski guide.

Gary Rogerson
MSc BSc(Hons) MCSP

Gary  specialises in the treatment and management of spinal disorders.  Gary graduated from Leeds University with a BSc(hons) degree in 1992. In 1999 he completed a Mastersin manipulative therapy at Curtin university Western Australia.  He currently works in the Spinal service at Ipswich hospital/Suffolk PCT as well as Sportsmed East’s clinics. Gary has a particular interest in the treatment of spinal pathologies and cervical headaches.

Jennie Norris
BSc(Hons) MCSP

Jennie  specialises in the treatment and management of upper limb disorders.  Jennie graduated from Southampton University with a BSc(hons) degree in 1999. She works at Ipswich hospital both in the physiotherapy department and in the Orthopaedic consultant clinic. Jennie has specialised in the rehabilitation of shoulder injuries since 2003. She has co-written treatment pathways, guidelines and post-op protocols which are used at the Ipswich hospital and Suffolk PCT. She has attended many shoulder courses and conferences and has lectured to other physiotherapists and doctors.  Jennie is also qualified in acupuncture and uses this as an adjunct where appropriate.

Ali Potter
BSc (Hons) Ost.

Ali qualified from the London School of Osteopathy in 2010, and is registered with the governing body GOsC (General Osteopathic Council). She has since been working as an associate in clinics in Woodbridge, Kessingland and Ipswich. As an osteopath she has experience treating a varied catalogue of acute and chronic patients including obstetrics, geriatrics, paediatrics and sports injuries.

Ali has been a Personal trainer for 8 years, registered with REPS - level 3, and in that time has met a diverse range of requirements from improving fitness, weight loss management, pre and post natal, to special populations, such as osteoporosis, Parkinson's and MS. Ali also has considerable knowledge of teaching core stability for back pain and instability.

Ali's experience also means she can use her osteopathic skills together with her personal training skills to focus on functional fitness and core stability for back pain.

Thea Latham
BSc(Hons) MCSP

Thea graduated from the University of East Anglia in 2005. Since then she has worked at Ipswich Hospital, and is now a senior physiotherapist specialising in musculoskeletal therapy and pain management. She also has experience in sports management spending four seasons at Ipswich Town Football Academy. Thea is a qualified member of the AACP and is able to use acupuncture (where appropriate) but her main interest lies in Clinical Pilates and its application in gaining function and pain relief in a graduated and closely supervised manner.

Clinical Pilates was developed by an Australian physiotherapist. It is used to train the functional stability of the body with pathology specific exercises, rather than focusing purely on strength It is suitable for almost everyone and can be adapted accordingly to incorporate stability training, injury diagnosis and management. Thea currently works on matwork Pilates (easy to re-create in your home!) but hopes to complete a course in the near future to use the Pilates reformer to continue to progress the service and application of Pilates to the highest level available.

Dr. Ahmad Alkhatib
Ph.D, MSc., FHEA

He earned a PhD (Sport and Exercise Physiology) and an MSc in Sports Science (Fitness and Health) from the University of Essex, UK. His research publications have regularly appeared in national and international journals and conferences. Dr Alkhatib is a professional member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science, European College of Sports Science, and the Physiological Society. His applied work has ranged from working with elite athletes to fitness and health enthusiasts helping them to achieve success in sports performance and health. He now focuses on the practical applications of research in sport performance, health and fitness sectors.

Gerry Weatherley
Personal Performance Consultant

A specialist in key issue management, Gerry focuses on personal performance improvement, increasing the client’s individual, practical ability to overcome the blocks which can often obstruct recovery and hinder achievement and satisfaction.  A 15 year involvement with the UK’s leading vascular and orthopaedic surgeons in reconstructive procedures gave him the opportunity to observe, first hand, that regaining the all important body/mind balance is the key factor to rehabilitation and recovery when any physical or emotional setbacks are experienced.

To enable him to provide clients with the best tools to achieve this  he has studied with, and assisted, some of today’s foremost personal change - makers in Europe and the US including Michael Neill, Paul McKenna, Michael Breen and Richard Bandler since 2003. In 2007 he added a northern universities NCFE coaching accreditation to his master practitioner license in Neuro Linguistic Programming.  For clients with private health cover a BUPA  provider no. is available on request.
