Running Biomechanics
What do we all want to do as runners? We want to run faster and longer and we dread having to take time off because of injury.
Unfortunately this leaves us prone to the scourge of runners everywhere – overuse injuries. These can manifest themselves as tendinopathies, tears and soft tissue damage in virtually every joint from the ankle to the neck.
How can something as simple as putting one foot in front of the other leave two thirds of participants injured to the extent they cannot run at any one time.
What we at Sportsmed east are trying to do is to incorporate the principles of efficient running into every runner’s unique style to reduce the chance of injury and increase economy of effort. In short we want to help you run faster longer and spend less time on the injury bench.
The basic principles of economical and efficient running are developed from years of observation of elite athletes, and the development of drills and techniques by biomechanical specialists. These minimise wasted energy expenditure and improve the biomechanics of the gait to minimise the risk of injury and to aid the rehabilitation of injured runners without these words that every runner hates to hear “you must rest”.
Mark Hainsworth is a GP and a runner, He has a sports medical interest and diploma and has spent many hours researching and developing the skills required to analyse a runner with the aid of video, and incorporate tips into a runner’s style to allow the runner to incorporate the principles of efficient running into his/her own style. I believe that running is not bad for you – Running badly is bad for you.
Sportsmed east can analyse your form either by video, online or in person and produce a report. This report will outline errors in form and give you drills, tips and training aids to overcome these problems. This will reduce your chance of re-injury and help you achieve that goal of longer faster and spend less time on the injury bench. Sportsmed East aim to help each individual achieve their potential –and provide a comprehensive health care service for people in sport. We want people to stay fit; we want to prevent injury and to help the individual understand their performance.
